Blast from the Past: Rediscovering Connections within Our Larger Community

Hello everyone! In today's "Blast from the Past" feature, we're exploring more than just a photo from our archives; we're diving into the heart of our larger community. This image captures a group of individuals who represent a specific community within our community. But who are they, and what special group do they belong to? As we look back, I invite you to scrutinize the photo and see if you recognize any of these faces. Each person here has played a role in shaping a particular segment of our community, contributing to its unique character and activities. The event captured in the photo also holds significance. Do you recall what this gathering was about? Were you there, and what memories do you have of it? This event and the community it represents have likely been on hiatus, especially with the challenges posed by the pandemic. However, the good news is that this is about to change, and we are gearing up to meet in person once again. For those of you who are

Blast from the Past: Deciphering a Blurry Memory from 2006

Hello, everyone! In today's edition of "Blast from the Past," we're presented with a unique challenge. We have a photo from 2006, but there's a catch - it's blurry. Despite the lack of clarity, this image holds a piece of our shared history, and I believe together, we can uncover the story behind it. The photo might be a bit fuzzy, but it captures a moment in time, a snapshot of our community's journey. Perhaps with some collective effort and a bit of detective work, we can identify the people in the picture.  Think back to 2006 – what events, gatherings, or milestones were happening in our community? Who were the key figures around that time? Your recollections might provide valuable context that could help in identifying the people in the photo. This exercise isn't just about identifying faces from a blurry image; it's about reconnecting with our past, no matter how unclear it may seem. It's about piecing together the fragments of our history

Blast from the Past: Revisiting a Memorable 2007 Event

Hello, cherished community members! In today’s installment of our "Blast from the Past" series, we're throwing it back to a memorable event from 2007. The details might be a bit hazy, but with a little collective memory, we can bring this picture back to life. The central clue to unlocking this memory is the presence of lilies on the stage. These beautiful flowers set the scene for what must have been a special occasion. But what exactly was this event celebrating or marking? Was it a seasonal festival, a commemorative gathering, or perhaps a milestone for our community? Now, let's turn our attention to the people in the photo. They were undoubtedly key players in this event. Do you recognize any of these faces? They could be long-standing members, volunteers, or even special guests with a significant role in the occasion. They could be long-standing members of our community, special guests, or perhaps even individuals who played a significant role in what we were celebrating that day. One detail in the photo that might catch your eye is the floor, which appears to be in less-than-perfect condition. Why is that? Maybe there's an interesting story behind it? And finally, I'm reaching out to you - were you there at this party? If so, what memories do you have of the event? Was there a special significance that the event held for you

Each event in our community has its unique flair and significance, and this one is no exception. It might have been a celebration, a commemoration, or perhaps a regular gathering that holds a special place in our collective memory. In the photograph, there's a person playing the harp. Do you recall who this talented musician is? The harpist's performance undoubtedly added a layer of elegance and tranquility to the event.  Ha. And the hair? Alongside the harpist, there are other individuals who appear in the photo. Each of them played a role in making the event memorable. Do you recognize them? Perha

Blast from the Past: Celebrating an Iconic Figure in Our Community

Blast from the Past: Celebrating an Iconic Figure in Our Community Hello to all our cherished community members! In today's special edition of "Blast from the Past," we're featuring a truly unforgettable figure, someone whose presence has been pivotal in our community's journey. She still shows up now and then in the same elegant, cheerful way she was known for.  She's a person no retrospective could be complete without, and her story is intertwined with the very fabric of our organization. Before I joined, she was already here, a guiding light through numerous trials and tribulations. Her resilience and unwavering spirit have been a beacon of hope and strength for us all. It's her dedication and commitment that helped hold our community together during some of the most challenging times. But now, I turn to you, our community members, with a little challenge: Do you recognize who she is? Think back to the days, perhaps years ago, when her influence and pre

Today's Blast from the Past: Honoring Two Long-Standing Community Members from 2002 Hello everyone! Today, I'm excited to take you on a journey back to 2002 with our "Blast from the Past" series. We're featuring two remarkable individuals who have been pillars of our community for longer than I can remember. Their dedication and contributions have been nothing short of extraordinary. Do you recognize these faces from our archives? One of them, as evident from the name tag in the photo, was an official of the board back in 2002. Their leadership and guidance played a crucial role in steering our community toward growth and success. But do you remember what roles they held? The other individual, equally important and impactful, has a long list of contributions to our Center. Their enthusiasm and commitment to our cause have been a source of inspiration for many. But here's where you come in: Can you recall who these individuals are and what specific roles or con

Blast From the Past - Can You Identify These Volunteers?

Blast From the Past Hello, everyone! As we stroll down memory lane, we've stumbled upon a gem from the past that deserves a special spotlight. Today's "Blast From the Past" feature takes us back to our Board Meeting in May 2001, held in Room 3 at the Center. Do you remember those days? The meeting room buzzed with ideas and enthusiasm, thanks to our key volunteers who dedicated themselves tirelessly for three years of service. These individuals weren't just participants; they were the driving force behind our most successful initiatives. But here's a fun challenge: Can you identify these volunteers and recall which committees they were part of? Each of these volunteers brought unique skills and perspectives to their respective committees, contributing significantly to our community's growth and vibrancy. We'd love to jog your memory and encourage you to share your guesses or fond recollections of these volunteers. Who knows, your comments might just re

Laura Baker - Thank You, CSLSR, for your support.

The 2023 ALC Ride was a true blessing.  Throughout, we had so much support from the AIDS/Lifecycle organization, our North Bay Positive Pedalers training group and Training Ride Leaders (including Jerry Huffaker and Mathew Duran!), and the CSLSR Community.  Thank you, CSLSR, for all of your support!  This was my third ride, and it was the best so far.  It’s an obvious physical challenge, as well as a mental one.  But, additionally, it’s a spectacular journey where you can lose yourself to the glory of the beautiful, engaged, and hopeful ALC community.  I was not a cyclist before joining ALC in 2018 - if you have any desire to join, we welcome you!  Thank you, CSLSR, for all of your many gifts. CSLSR AIDS/LifeCycle Team Volunteer

Linn Harding - There Will Be More Layers To Uncover

The Ride, for me, has been a multilayered experience. Initially, I was overwhelmed as I came to understand the enormity of the process: the thousands of people who have lost loved ones, many of them standing along the streets of their community holding “Thank You” signs and pictures of their lost sons, brothers, lovers, and friends; the millions of dollars raised to keep the San Francisco and LA clinics serving the community; the rare and welcome feeling to be surrounded by kindness and acceptance instead of constantly fearing rejection, hate, and violence. This was big stuff. Eventually, I came to understand that each rider represented hundreds of people who had put them there. For our team, all the people at the Center who supported the bake sales and otherwise donated help and funding, the bakeries, and all the employees who sent baked goods our way. Family members, friends, and co-workers all represented by that one bike rider. We were all out there. The riders are simply the publ

Susan Bennett: It Is a Privilege to Listen to People

I appreciate being a Practitioner because it gives me the opportunity to see the Divine in the people. I pray with after service on Sundays and in the county jail each week.  It is a privilege to listen to people describe the conditions in their lives and share with them what I know to be true about the love and goodness that is the Divine. Susan Bennett

Patricia Byrne: Volunteering Helps me Go Deeper

I like being a CSL Practitioner because it allows me to help others in a variety of ways:  after service SMTs, visiting inmates as part of the Jail Ministry Team, facilitating a book study class.  It also helps me to go deeper into my practice by being with other Practitioners.

Tamarya Hulme: The Best Gift I Receive is When I Pray for Others

Praying is the best gift that being a practitioner brings. Whether it is to a heart in hand client or a jail inmate client, remembering the truth of each one of us uplifts both the giver and receiver of prayer.

Rosalie Sulgit Shay: Why I Volunteer for the Prison Ministry

Being part of the Jail Ministry team is deeply fulfilling.  We call them spiritual visits; I call them Oneness experiences.  It is a time to let all labels and conditions fall aside.  Trusting all I am as a Practitioner, I listen, speak, feel and offer what comes to mind and heart. Rosalie Sulgit Shay The Jail ministry has been serving the inmates of the Sonoma County Jail for several years. They serve about 60 inmates each month with Science of Mind classes and one on one visits. In addition, based on the community donations this ministry receives, they supply the inmates with Science of Mind books and reading materials

Linda O'Rear - Volunteering Is Connecting

As part of the giving intention team, we are always finding new and creative ways to appreciate the members of our community. Volunteering has taught me the value of knowing and seeing our spiritual family. I love to quietly work behind the scenes to facilitate an event. Volunteering for me is connecting and connecting fills me with so much love for the Center and even beyond the Center. Linda O'Rear Volunteering brings people together who share a common goal of making a positive impact on the world. This collective effort creates a sense of community and belonging, providing a supportive and nurturing environment. By working alongside like-minded individuals, we develop meaningful relationships and friendships, expanding our social circles and forging connections that can enrich our lives. Being part of a community that shares our values and aspirations can contribute to a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment.

Dennis O'Rear - You Are Right Where You Belong

I first came to the Center in 2007 when every dimension of my life was in turmoil. I went up on stage with other attendees as part of a Valentine’s Day celebration in 2008. Jeff put his hands on my head and said “You are right where you belong.” Cryptic words at the time, but very prescient. The philosophy of the Center was in line where my thinking had been drifting for some time. The Center provide me with stable ground that I could use to get my life on track. I volunteer as a way to saying thanks, and just because I enjoy it and the people I work with. Dennis O'Rear Volunteering allows us to step outside our comfort zones and confront new challenges. In these unfamiliar situations, we often discover hidden strengths, talents, and resilience within ourselves. As we navigate unfamiliar territories and work towards making a positive impact, we grow personally and spiritually. Volunteering also encourages self-reflection, prompting us to question our values, priorities, and the wa

Jan Davis - Why I am Grateful

I often hear our Center described as “a spiritual community that promotes global transformation through personal transformation.” I know I’ve been personally transformed at the Center through the weekly messages, classes, and mostly through the path of volunteering. Volunteering has introduced so many wonderful people into my life and given me chances to share my talents. Even more than that, volunteering gives me opportunities to practice the spiritual tools I’ve learned, and so many opportunities to learn about being a better person in relationships. I am grateful for everything that volunteering has brought into my life, and deeply grateful for the actions of so many other volunteers who create the Center so I can be lifted up each week. Someone puts out the cones and signs in the parking lot well before I arrive on Sunday morning. Some loving voice answers the phone when I call. Someone cleans up the leaves in the parking lot. Someone takes care of the children. Someone creates

Bob Hart - Why I Like to Volunteer

The first thing that comes to mind is, it’s fun.  I could stop right there but there is more.  Volunteering provided me the opportunity to be part of a team, to be engaged with others, working toward a common goal, sharing, cooperating, encouraging each other.  I found this to be true in all of the different volunteer positions, from being on the Board, being a member of the Giving Intention Team, on the Stewardship Team, jumping into the Nurturing Our Community program, and now coordinating the Art In the Center Program.  Even individual activities like pulling weeds, doing tasks for the maintenance department, or painting a room brought a deeper sense of being a part of our community. Volunteering has given me a deeper sense of belonging.   Much like my experience of watching services online during Covid and feeling like how great it was to be in the comfort of my home perfectly satisfied watching services on the wide screen tv, then coming back to in-person services and realizing wh

Jacque Hansen - Why I Serve

I love to volunteer with a heartfelt intention of cultivating more possibilities in people's lives, and in the animal/plant kingdoms.......... more possibility of freedom, peace, love and respect.! Jacque Hansen, RScP.   Thank you Jacque for your heart of service and demonstrating the profound spiritual benefits of volunteering.   In a world often consumed by self-interest and materialistic pursuits, finding a sense of purpose and fulfillment can be a challenging endeavor. However, one powerful avenue that offers both personal growth and the opportunity to make a positive impact is volunteering. Beyond the practical benefits of volunteering, such as acquiring new skills or building a professional network, there are profound spiritual advantages that can nourish the soul. Engaging in selfless acts can bring about a transformative experience. When we immerse ourselves in the act of volunteering, we encounter various people from diverse walks of life, often facing challenging circumst

Thank You to Our Spiritual Weeders

William Abel, Facility Manager, narrowly escapes being composted! Thank you to our spiritual weeders for cleaning up the property - still lots to go, but we made a dent!  Weeding is often seen as a tedious and mundane task, but when viewed from a spiritual perspective, it can become a profound and transformative experience. Just as we weed our gardens to create space for the plants we want to grow, we can weed our lives of unhelpful self-talk and behaviors to make room for the more desirous aspects we want to cultivate. In many spiritual traditions, weeding is seen as a form of purification or cleansing. By removing the weeds that are choking out our desired growth, we create space for new and healthier habits, attitudes, and relationships. Weeding can also be a form of mindfulness practice, as we tune into our surroundings and focus our attention on the task at hand. Weeding can be an opportunity for introspection and self-reflection. As we work to remove unwanted plants from our gard
